Summer is the Only Season

Spring and summer belong to my mother, while autumn and winter belong to my husband. What is left for me? Persephone spends half of the year underground with her husband, the king of the dead, and the other half on earth with her mother, the goddess of the harvest. This has been the way of things for nine thousand years, ever since the agreement was made. However, this spring, when she resurfaces, something is different. The land is being lashed by rains, crops are growing out of season or not at all, people are attempting to build a road through the woods, and her mother seems incapable of stopping them. The natural world is undergoing rapid changes, and even the gods have lost control.

While Demeter works to regain her powers and ward off her daughter's husband, who wants to keep his queen underground forever, Persephone experiences freedom for the first time, joining a group of protestors. Accustomed to gazing up at the world from below, she realizes, while looking down on the earth from the treetops with activist Snow, that she has choices she can make for herself. However, what will these choices mean for her mother, her husband, and for the new life growing inside her?

No Season but the Summer takes a timeless myth and flips it on its head, questioning what happens when our oldest stories fail us and when all the rules have changed. Above all, it is a book about the power of choice.
